The Association of Nigerian Gay Men (ANGAM) has issued a communique after their recent Conference in a 4 – Star Hotel in Abuja expressing support for Alhaji Abubakar Atiku ahead of the 2019 Presidential Elections. The President of the Group who decided to be anonymous said “ As one of our own, Atiku, if he wins, will stop the persecution of Nigerian gays. Also as one of our highest patrons, his sympathy for the Gay Cause is assured”.
Plans are underway, as Atiku has emerged as the PDP flag bearer to raise money from the US and Europe for the campaign. One of the points discussed was to host Africa’s largest Gay Pride Parade in 2020 in Abuja should everything go to plan.
It is to be recollected that the Nigerian Government passed an anti-gay law that punishes the solemnization of same -sex marriages with up to 14 years of jail time. There were rumors that the bill for this stringent law which is very popular among the people was first initiated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to punish his ambitious Vice, Atiku, who is alleged to keep younger men in homosexual relationships. It was signed into law by the immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan.
